I really enjoyed listening to John speak about his own learning when it came to developing and working with his teams.
It’s clear that ‘team’ is central to him and his skills in this area is a major asset to the way he works and builds his pubs but he needed to learn it. Here are the steps he outlines in his learning.
“If you’re going to grow, then you’ve got to grow it through your team”
- One person at 100% will only ever be limited to that 100% no matter how good they are. Two people at 70% will still get more done. Growth will come through your team and developing others.
- You have to develop your own leadership style in order to lead a team well. This will then enable you to gain results from others.
- Build a like-minded team with like-minded leaders
“to be successful in this role I had to do it through people, developing people, developing leaders [and] leaders developing leaders.”
“I really focused hard on trying to attract like minded people, and what I mean by like minded [is that] they had a real desire to look after the community.”
