We all know that people learn through failure but when it is someone you manage and the result comes back to you, that is not so easy.
John reflects in the podcast that “not letting people fail was a real problem” for him.
He wrestled with the desire to be successful and early on he couldn’t see how failure helped that. However over time “I did understand that for them to fail and fail well … there’d be good learnings from there.”
In fact he goes on to talk about creating the right environment where there is a safety net so that employees could “fail well” and learn. As long as the failure didn’t take us off the banks!
